| Like its' slower brother, T-Max 400 exhibits very fine grain and incredible sharpness for a film of its' speed class . And it's even more sensitive to development variations than TMX ! However when you need speed, you need T-Max 400 ! With a developer such as Ilfords' Microphen an effective film speed of 1600 is easily achieved with little compromise in the quality of the image. This film reminds me very much of Plus-X Pan Pro. It's spectral sensitivity is very similar. The slightly extended red-light sensitivity means that skies will be a little darker and the skin-tones of portrait subjects will be a little 'whiter'. And just because its' sensitive to development variations, don't think that you can't control it. On the contrary, I once overexposed TMY 4X5 sheets by 4 stops for an effective EI of 25 ! Upon unloading the film holders and finding the notch code to be the unexpected TMY, I developed it in Rodinal 1:100 for 10 minutes @ 70 degrees F, which is about half the amount of time I normally use . It worked fine I'm happy to say. Tons of shadow detail ! | |
