| Remember that pyro is somewhat toxic and plan your mixing accordingly. Add a pinch of the bisulfite to the water before adding the Elon to prevent oxidation. You may also want to add a little 91 % isopropyl alcohol to the metaborate as it is a fairly high concentration and might not go into solution readily. This formula was compounded by Gordon Hutchings whose wonderful book, "The Book of Pyro", I highly recommend. Especially if you are going to be "getting serious" with this brew. I find it to work very well with the old-tech films such as Plus-X, Pan Pro, Tri-X Pan Pro and fairly well with APX-25 although the speed loss is something to contend with. Do also be aware that pyro may stain films unevenly and in fact it did so on several sheets of my TMY-400 which were subsequently found to be unprintable except at the lowest of magnifications. Mr. Hutchings gives a recommendation for the addition of EDTA which works as a sequestering agent. This supposedly will help with the problem of streaking . The specifics are on page 34 of "The Book of Pyro". | |
